Having trouble logging on?

There are a number of reasons why you may be having trouble logging on the Turn Key Home website, even if you have successfully logged on the site before.  Most often, the problem lies in the configuration of your computer, but the problems are almost always easily solved.  Following are some helpful tips, in order of the most common problems, to help you troubleshoot log on problems:

1.  COOKIES: The number one problem members have when trying to log on, is that they enter their User ID and Password, and the system does not accept the log in.  The most common reason for this is that the user does not have "cookies" enabled on their windows operating software or browser.

Cookies are files that allow our website to "remember" who you are from page to page once you have logged on the site.  If they are not allowed on your operating system or browser, then you will not be able to properly view many websites.

One reason cookies may not be enabled on your computer is that your security setting in your operating system is set too high.  For most Internet activity, the highest security setting is not necessary, and will keep you from viewing many sites.  To see where yours is set, click on MY COMPUTER, then CONTROL PANEL, then INTERNET OPTIONS, then SECURITY.  The level of your system security should be displayed.  If it is at a high setting, try moving it down a notch.  Then try logging on the site again.

Also make sure that your browser has cookies enabled within in it, also within options.  Some browsers, including some current installations of Internet Explorer, come with cookies DISABLED, and they need to be manually enabled.

If you are still unsure how to enable cookies, you might check with your Internet Service Provider, or someone who is familiar with operating systems and computers.

2. PASSWORD:  Be sure you are entering your User ID and Password correctly.  If you like, the system can send your User ID and password to your email account on file.

3. BROWSER CACHE: It is always a good idea, both for proper operating functions and for speed, to occasionally clear the cache (temporary files), or short term memory of your browser.  This is usually done from the browser toolbar, by clicking on OPTIONS and then MAINTENANCE.  This can also cause log in problems.

4. DELETING OLD COOKIES:  If you do have "cookies" enabled on your computer and browser, sometimes, deleting OLDER cookies, especially cookies from our website, will solve the problem.  You can usually find the cookie file in your Windows directory.  If you are unsure how to do this, you should ask for assistance for your Internet Service Provider, or from someone who understands operating systems and computers.

5. CHECK YOUR BROWSER: If you are using Netscape, especially an older version of Netscape, some users have reported problems accessing the site.  Microsoft Internet Explorer is the preferred browser for accessing our site, and it can be downloaded for free at www.microsoft.com/ie .  Doing so has solved the issue for most Netscape users with problems.  If you are using an older version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may also want to consider upgrading to a more recent verson.  Be aware that some new installations of Microsoft Internet Explorer come with "cookies" disabled.  They need to be enabled.  Please see above.

6. FIREWALLS:  If you log on from work, or from any location where you may be behind a security firewall, this could also interfere with logging on our site.  To log on from behind a firewall, cookies must be enabled.  Firewalls can also interfere with your ability to use our Java Chat.

7. JAVA: Although Java is not required to log on our system, Java must be enabled for certain features to work for you, including using our chat room, and message quoting within our message boards.  Your ISP can help you make sure Java is enabled for you.  Some security firewalls do not allow Java. If you use WebTV to log on our site, Java is not an option.  You can however, still access our site.

If none of the above items solves your problems, please contact us and we'll try to assist you further.
